The story is quite simple. I asked 24 Italian graphic designers, whom I respect and admire, to send me 16 printed pages, I collected contributions from a number of friends, then put it all together, and Red, wine and green is the result. A cocktail or a mess? Red, wine and green is a book that illustrates the graphic design situation in Italy. It gives an overview of the designers who in my opinion have distinguished themselves even more for their choices than their work: graphic designers with a different attitude, who put interpretation before execution. Leafing through the book, I hope it will be possible to "see" a profession that - also in Italy, and not without difficulty - is coming to terms with major change. A profession contaminated by a "vital" virus that has irreparably, but fortunately, redesigned its borders. A profession with infinite new approaches that can be combined with already existing ones but cannot replace them, in a continual oscillation of choices and ideas. Red, wine and green seeks to interpret the different ways of plying a trade that has found its fortune - and fresh èlan - in the many new opportunities offered it. I went from one place to another, from one world to another, from one studio to another, at times even into unusual territories for graphic design or for a canonical way of understanding graphic design: I was interested in the energy produced by these different approaches when put together; I liked the idea of having a noisy, richly diverse book. I've had fun, I don't think I've been an editor, I believe I've worked on this project as a graphic designer, thinking about the final result, thinking about the montage, about the sequence of the pages. Perhaps in search of an idea, of a starting point for a different way of doing graphics. Kisses for all. Giorgio Camuffo Back to RedWine&Green |
